Final Ideas explanation

At the start it is a close up of the women. Sitting in a white room. This slow up would emphasise her fear and indicate to the audience she is unstabel. This would be followed by a sound that supports these emotions. Flash backs of the night when she got attacked would appear between the shots of the woman. The shots would move further and further away to show her isolation. Shots of her walking through a dark park would be intervaled between the woman in the white room as flash backs. It ends on her about to be grabed by the person who is going to attack her. She then screams and then teaser trailer ends. This leaves the audience wondering what is going to happen next whilst still giving the audience a story line to remember and understand.

Sound

For the parts of the trailer that focus on the woman i wanted a sound that would add to the atmosphere. I extracted a sound from a sound track and edited it. I made it reacure, this meant looping it so the sond would connote confusion to the audience. I also slowed the sound down to distort. This also made the track unrecognisable from the origional track to make the sound fit my teaser trailer.

Story Boards

To begin with the story board i drew contained my initial plans but as i began to film i found that i had more ideas and different shots to try so my story board was used but shots were changed and added to create more effect. This allowed me to use as many shots as possible for the trailer.

Audience Research

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.

In conclusion after revieving my date i gathered that most people want a teaser trailer to take its time through the story line and not rush unless the tention is meant to build up alongside the camera edits. I hope to achieve this by keeping a fast pase but to not so fast that the audience can not follow. I also discovered that using sound in connection with some edits is something that the audience expect and something that will increase the likeablilty of my teaser trailer and my date informend me this is what they prefer.

Target Audience

I e-mailed all of my contacts questions and asked them to answer them so i would be able to get my target audience right. Here is the questions with the best answers.

If you watched a teaser trailer and you saw a woman walking alone in a dark lonley setting would you feel comfortable letting your child who are under 15 watch it?

No, not really. Films like that should really have a 15 borerline, young teens prefer different films and wouldnt be interested but may get scared in the future because of the film. Older teens and adults can deal with that sort of film.

This had a big impact on my teaser trailer as the answer of this question dependson my whole story line. I sent this e-mail before i decided on my story line. I did have an idea of a woman walking alone through a dark place but then realised that i needed to know my target audience. This meant finding information. So once i e-mailed a selection of people i gathered that this film should be rated 15 as people children under this age may not understand what is happening. It may also have a negative affect on them at such a young age.

I sent one question in hope that i would get a good solid answer back. This had a big imact on my teaser trailer as it decided my whole story line and who my target audince is. This meant making my film an 18 and not a 15 as parents do not feel that they letting a 15 year old child watch a film with such a strong story line.

Final Ideas

The story line of my film consists of a woman trying to get back on her feet after an attack, in the trailer she is sitting in a room alone reflecting on what happened, its still raw. She sits in the room alone isolating herself from everything hoping it will go away. Flash backs remind her what happened. The fast sequence of flash backs are a big contrast of her sitting in a room alone.

Ideas

Inspiration

I like this picture as the framing of the shot iceloates the woman. I like the idea of dressing the women in white which instantly makes her appear innocent and pure. This may be something i aspire to do in my film. I also like the forest around her and the fact she looks lost, the expression in her face is something i feel would fit into my film.

I like the contrast of character, this person may be a figment of the womans imagionation. I like the shadow affect and i like the sillowet, this does not give the characters identity away but still shows he is a force to be recond with.

My set ideas involve a path through the woods with a woman walking through, i want her to be dressed in normal clothes so that she is not out of place. I want it to be naturalistic so that it can buiild up the tension because i would want the audience to think that it could happen to them in a setting that may be similar to a place by where they live.

Branding

X Men

Film Poster

The sense of branding carrys through out, with wolf man in the center of the frame showing his power and authority.

Colour

The use of a blue background and wolf man in a white vest indicates his power and could suggest he is iceolated from the world, by how different and powerful he is.

Layout

The layout is simple focusing on wolf man to show his power and authroity. with people behind him and text infront of him which shows and emphasises his power.

Film Magazine

Colour

The colour ramins blue in the background and the white on his top instantly shows a contrast. With the white and black text surrounding him but not infront of him to show his authrrity.

Layout

The layout is simple and still keeps wolf man in the middle to emphasise his big body frame and how how powerful he is.

Poster Advertisments

Shutter Island

Colour

The black, white and grey colours represent a dull atmosphere. The red shining from the fire draws us to it straight away. This indicates that this may be a main focus of the film. Shutter Island is in a red font which also draws us to it. Red indicates danger, blood and maybe a hint of romance.

Layout

The layout of this poster instantly draws us to the character at the top of the page as he fades into the island. Shutter Island is situated below these pictures in order of importance maybe.

Text

The text on this poster follows a simple pattern of the title Shutter Island and the infomation at the bottom, this is again in order of importance. The actors name is in white places at the top of Shutter Island which is in red, this shows a strong contrast, this red indicates pasion and death where as the white represents purity and innocence, this could indicate that the main character is the Potagonist.

Image

The use of a faces image places on top of the Island instantly draws us to the conclusioin that this character has something to hide as half of his face is hidden. He almost looks like a ghost type figure, Almost like a dream. As you move down the page it brings us back to reality. The strong image of the island is significant as it instantly shows the danger and horror of the film and the place in which it is located.

Sin City

Colour

The beam of white light is almost like a halo around her, this instantly tells us she is or is represented to be innocent. The light white and grey colours indicate this woman to be in a bad situation in a rough place, she appears to be too good for the place she is situated. The red Sin City draws us to the conclusion of dancer and passion something this film may hold.

Layout

The layout draws our eyes to the woman. She is the main focus of the page. The title which is on the top layer shows the order of importance.

Text

The fact it says Jessica Alba is Nancy takes the reality away from the adveritmsnet. The bold red font in which sin city is in shows how powerful this poster it, the red shows themes of pasion, violence and sexual desire.

Image

This pose shows the characters sexuality. . she is objectified. The clear audience is men. The themes of sex drugs and rock and role spring to mind. Men look at women but women watch themselfs been looked at. The male gaze. The obscure pose she pulls makes her look like a doll and makes more reality from the advertisment.

The Dark Knight

Colour
The ice cold blue and white against the black gives the character power and makes him appear evil. The hold red indicates danger and death which are strong themes in this film.
Layout
The simple layout instantly tells the audience that the jokes plays a vital role in the film, this show strust in the brand as they do not use bat man but another character that may not be as well known, they do this so show some variety in the film and give the film more of an identity.
Text
The text is simple "Why so serious?" is like a catch phrase which also shows trust in the brand and also give the audience something to think about and look foward to.
Image
The strong image against the fuzzy background makes us focus on the character with the logo on the bottom to show us the branding.

Posters

The Hulk
The use of the "EMPIRE" log being cracked aswell as the rest of the page gives the illusion that the "Hulk" is going to break through the page. This is the only film advertised which shows real trust in the brand. The colour is linked with the green from the hulk to the green text below. The red is a traditional colour for "EMPIRE" to give it an identiry and make it stand out. The 3D circular logo stants out as its against grey. The "ENPIRE" logo is always big to dominate the page whilst to not tdetract from the film that is being advertised. Using such a big picture shows that the audience is already established.
The Joker
The use of the colour green and pink ties in with the "Joker" cloun feel to the advertisment. The "Joker" is infront of the "EMPIRE" logo which shows the order of importance and the support in which the "EMPIRE" brand has towards this advertisment. The list on the right hand side are films that are of less importance but may attract more viewers, these films may not have as good a status as the "Joker" does but at the same time the "Joker" may need aids to advertisment to increase sales of this issue. They are at the edge so they dont obstrust the page. The other colours compliment the red and make it stand out as it is a brand.

Detailed analysis

After studying each trailer i am going to look at camera work, editing, mise-en-scene and sound. I will also look at how grapics are used to enhance the trailer.

The Dark Knight

This trailer has alot of diologe at the start, this establishes the trailer and gives the audience an insite to what the film is about. Once the diologue has ended more action and typical trailer must and sound is injected to creat atmosphere and build up the tension. The first thing we hear is a deep voice which draws us in and forces us to listen to wht he is saying as the screen in black. This is then followed by a crashing sound which gives us a as clue to what the film will focusing on (action). The dialogue that then follows intrigues us to find out what happens next. The crashing sound then gets greater and greater to promote the thriller theme. The drum builts up with the laugh of the Joker to finish which gives the film a stautus and in a way leaves us with a sound that will stick in our minds and ring in our ears.

The editing in this trailer is very minimal, the focus is on the dialogue and graphics. Fades are used to give the Teaser trailer a misterious creepy atmosphere. The constant fades into black empasise the dark empty feel to the film.

The camera work on this trailer mainly focuses on the graphics, big blue bolts rushing around the screen over the bat man symbol emphasises the status and power in which Batman holds.

The mise-en-scene in this trailer just focuses on the Badman logo as this is a graphic themed trailer. This forces us to relate that symbol with Batman which helps us to relate to this Trailer.

Drag Me To Hell

The sound in this is naturalistic at the start to establish the story, it then begins to get fast with more echos and differnt people talking to build up suspense. Screaming takes place to scare the audience. This trailer wills you to want to see what happnes next, the good hard hitting story line is reflected in the dialogue. The eerie must then becomes apparent when the scary looking woman enters to indicate that somethings wrong. The must then deepens to highlight tensioin and fear. The horrid breath like sound that the woman projects is also followed by a screach to deepen the horror. The old womans voice goes staright though you with a hint of a croke with that evil side to the tone of the voice. The strings that are played afterwards show a realisation, they realise she has been cursed.

The editing it naturalistic at the start to let the audience understand what this trailer is about and get to know the characters, it then gets faster as the sound does to get the scary message across and edge away from the naturalistic side of the film. The pase of the shots instantly increase when the woman enters the scene.

The camera work is also naturalistic at the start but as the trailer gets to the end close ups and differnt shots are used, long shorts, close ups and extreme close ups to draw the audience in and show variety in feelings, this confuses the audience and again, build but the idea of the audience being scared and inreeged.

This is naturalistic in what the characters wear, this changes as the trailer goes on with with a woman who they have made look naturalistic, with a scary face, this makes the audience realise that a normal person could look like this not just someone on a film which again relates to their lifes which supports the appeal of the trailer, which makes the film more appealing to watch.

Hightmare On Elm Street

The sound creates a scary feel to the trailer as it buils up over the trailer to scare the audience. Different screams and effects scare the audience and will them to want to watch more. The instant bang of the of the drum as the trailer starts. The crashing and scraping that follows also shows significant horror trates to the trailer. The drums beats get more constant to support the tension. The first dialogue said is shouted which instantly evokles the tense atmosphere. The sonstant screaming after scares the audience into wanting to know what happnes next and what scares the so much.

The editing slowly gets faster and faster to show the build up in action, the start establishes the film then the end is showing how it can scare you and allows you to see what the film can do, how it can scare you and an idea of what may happen.

The camera work uses long shots, with close ups, this cariety lets the audience see the divercity in different scenes in the film and also confuses them and puts them in an uneasy opsition which is good for a horror type film. This is someone i aspire to follow. The close ups on each thing that is likely to scare the audience is used to give effect and highlight the horror aspect of the film.

The mise-en-scene is naturalistic in the clothes the characters wear, this lets the audience see that the things that happen in the film could happen to anyone, as they dress similar to the audience. The different effects engage the audience and allow them to feel scared and make them feel that these effects could happen to them in their own house if it can look so realistic on films.

Poster Research

Drag Me To Hell

This poster use a fire grapic which follows on into the pictures of the woman screaming with another grapic of hands surrounding her. This give the poster a horror feel and gives the poster some individuality.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

This dark poster instantly allows the audience to understand the horror aspect of the film. The use of the black and red colour supports this. This poster is simple and straight to the point, something which i believe works in the advertising industry.

The Dark knight

This poster leaves a rherorical question for the audience to think about, i like the use of this as it allows the audience to interact with the poster. Again the use of black and red give the poster a 'scary' persona. This is also contradicted by the face which is madeup of the bad man symbol which confuses the audience and forces them to think deeply into the poster and what it means and what its trying to tell them as the audience.
